I have a lead on a 95 5400 with cab and 1000 hours
I am not sure of the hp but has 4wd it was city owned
so has some dents and dings does come with a 540 loader.
Tires are 50% asking 19500 is this a good reliable model
easy to start in the winter model?
Do these tractors have issues I should ck out before I buy.
Thanks

The 5400 is a good reliable tractor. The only issues I know of Is if you have a left hand reverser, there were some issues with the park mechanism. Be sure any product improvement programs have been done. Your dealer should provide this information if you give them the serial number. If you don't have a dealer to ask, post your serial number here or email me and I can run the number for you. On the cab models, there were some problems with the door hinges on the early models. New improved hinges are available. These are typically pretty good with cold weather starting although a block heater is always a good investment to assure easy starting in cold temps. ....

Thanks JD,
for your suggestions, I am going to have to flip
the 20 for the entire posts, that is way frustrating.Ugh

I think we are leaning towards the new 5105 as it is
priced at 5000 more but better financing and warranty.
I think it would make a handy all around tractor, and
eventually we will get a back hoe for it.Any suggestions
on this model, Maybe we can get a package deal with the
hoe and all. I think I will sleep better knowing I can
put the hay out for the cattle when I need to.
Thanks for your time... ....

The Deere 5400 is a 68 hp tractor with 60 pto hp. I think it would be a good choice but you may have to make some compromises with respect to baling hay but I think it would work out OK. My question would be, why is the city selling a tractor withy only 1,000 hours on it???? That is hardly broken in. Is this the same machine that had a new clutch put in it? I suspect this machine has led a VERY hard life if it has had the clutch replaced at 1,000 hours. Could have been an employee who did not know how to operate it properly. Has the tractor been left parked outside? This can take a big toll on any machine.

If this machine has been properly repaired and kept up that is not a bad price for a 5400 4WD Cab tractor. $22,000 to $22,500 would be a good price for just the tractor with cab. Add another $2500 for the FEL. It might be worth your time to ask to see the maintenance records for this machine to get a feel for how it was cared for and life it has had. You may even want to get the machine serial number and run it by the local Deere dealer to see what if any work they performed on it. If it is a dog.......they will know and hopefully tell you about it. ....

Yes the same, I assume they traded it in, as this is
at a dealer. I think we may go new for the warranty.
The price is not that much more and I have to have
something that will start well in the winter as I am
putting out lg round bales weekly.
Thats what I thought hardly broken in at 1000 hrs and
a new clutch already. Dealer said that being city owned the people that drive
them don't own them so there you go. Really seemed to be in good shape though. ....

Pro's and cons can always be debated about the muti users but chances are it always had the required services on time with a government entity owner. I've seen individuals work to kill equipment by not taking dealer recommended procedures for operating or even instructions from the owners manual for servicing time periods. ....
